THE ESSENTIAL EXPLANATION

Skin Biopsy: How Suspicious Lesions Are Investigated

A suspicious skin lesion may require clinical assessment, dermoscopy and biopsy. Depending on its location and suspected diagnosis, a clinician may take a partial sample or remove the entire lesion. Histopathology examines tissue structure and cells; a visual animation cannot establish whether a lesion is cancerous.

What to notice in the animation

Watch the sampling step and understand that diagnosis comes from the tissue examination. A changing, bleeding or otherwise concerning lesion warrants professional assessment.
